Private Lessons

We provide private sailing lessons on your sailboat or on one of ours. Sessions are typically 4 hours long. These classes can be scheduled Monday through Thursday. Rates vary depending on the size of the yacht and the number of students. We can teach up to 4 students at one time. Please send us possible dates that work for you and we will confirm the date.

Before the lesson, the instructor will discuss a lesson plan with each of the students. Each person will be given an opportunity to ask for particular areas of sailing they would like to focus on, and the instructor will attempt to cover each of these. We like to keep a progress card for each student which contains a full list of all the sailing skills which would make a proficient captain. Progress can then be measured during each lesson.

Examples are:

• Leaving and arriving at the dock under control of power or sail
• Points of sail
• Tacking and Gybing
• Reefing and sailing in strong wind conditions
• Sail trim for racing or cruising
• Anchoring
• Crew safety

Private sailing lessons are primarily for adults, who have perhaps experience sailing small boats when they were young, and who want to move on to ‘big boat sailing’. We can focus on any level of expertise, though, from beginner to perhaps someone who needs to perfect their sailing trim techniques so that they can compete more successfully in some of the racing opportunities in the area. Did you wonder what will happen if you change the luff tension on the mainsail, and what effect it would have on the boat’s performance on different points of sail in different wind conditions? Then perhaps a private lesson with one of our experienced, qualified instructors is just what you need.

We will be happy to take a family out too, who perhaps have little experience but are thinking about investing in a sailboat, and start from ground level.
